CO Wayne Allard (R) sponsored
legislation which designated the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Area in
Colorado’s San Isabel National Forest (PL 106-456).
CO Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R)
sponsored leg-islation which designated the Black Ridge Canyons
Wilderness near Grand Junction, Colorado (PL 106-353) and the
Gunnison Gorge Wilderness & Expansion of Black Canyon of the
Gunnison Wilderness (PL 106-76). Campbell is also the Senate sponsor
of legislation to designate the James Peak Wilderness (S. 1711).
CT Joseph Lieberman (D) is the
sponsor of leg- islation to designate the 1.5 million acre coastal
plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness (S. 411).
Lieberman also helped lead the successful filibuster of amendments
to the Senate Energy bill (S. 517) that would have opened the Arctic
Refuge to oil drilling.
IL Richard Durbin (D) is the
sponsor of America’s Red Rock Wilderness (S.786), a bill which
would designate more than nine million acres of land managed by the
Bureau of Land Management in Utah as Wilderness. Sen. Durbin also
sponsored an amendment last year to the Interior Appro-priations
bill (H.R. 2217) to prohibit funding for oil and gas drilling and
coal mining activities in national monuments.
IL Peter Fitzgerald (R)
sponsored an amendment in 2000 to the Interior Appropriations bill
(H.R. 4578) to cut $30 million from the Forest Service’s timber
sales budget and redirect the funds to fighting wildfires on
national forests.
MA John Kerry (D) helped lead
the successful filibuster of amendments to the Senate Energy bill
(S. 517) that would have opened the coastal plain of the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.
NV Harry Reid (D) championed
and co-sponsored legislation (introduced by former Senator Richard
Bryan), which created the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon
Wilderness and National Conservation Area in Nevada (PL 106-554).
Reid also played a key leadership role in efforts to block
amendments to the Senate Energy bill (S. 517) that would have opened
the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil
drilling.
SD Tom Daschle (D) led the
effort to craft a Senate Energy bill (S. 517) that did not include a
provision to allow oil drilling on the coastal plain of the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge and played a key leadership role in efforts
to block amendments to the bill that would have opened the Arctic
Refuge to drilling.
VA John Warner (R) sponsored
legislation (along with former Senator Chuck Robb), which designated
the Priest & Three Ridges Wilderness Areas in Virginia’s
George Washington National Forest (PL
106-471).
WI Russ Feingold (D) sponsored
legislation to fund a wilderness study and review for Wisconsin’s
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (S. 134). Funds for the
wilderness study (which is now underway) were secured by Feingold in
the Interior Appropriations Bill in 2000.

CA George Miller (D) authored
a Dear Colleague letter asking for support and the implementation of
the Roadless Area Conservation Policy that was pub- lished in the
Federal Register on January 12, 2001.
CO Diana DeGette (D) is the
sponsor of the Colorado Canyon Wilderness bill (H.R.4468), which
would protect nearly 1.6 million acres of land managed by the BLM
and adjacent Forest Service land on Colorado’s West Slope.
CO Scott McInnis (R) sponsored
legislation which designated the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness near
Grand Junction, Colorado (PL 106-353); the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness
& Expansion of Black Canyon of the Gunnison Wilderness (PL 106-
76); and the Spanish Peaks Wilderness in Colo-rado’s San Isabel
National Forest (PL 106-456).
CO Mark Udall (D) is the
sponsor of the James Peak Wilderness and Protection Area Act
(H.R.1576) and the Rocky Mountain National Park Wilderness (H.R.
1380). Udall has also sponsored amendments on the House floor
including an amendment last year to protect the wilderness
characteristics of the San Rafael Swell area in Utah and an
amendment in 2000 to redirect funds in the Interior Appropriations
bill from the timber sales program to protect fish and wildlife in
national forests.
CT Rosa DeLauro (D) is the
sponsor of the Alaska Rainforest Conservation Act (H.R. 2908) which
would protect more than 14 million acres of
public lands in the Tongass and Chugach National Forests as
Wilderness or through other protective designations.
CT Nancy Johnson (R) is the
lead co-sponsor of legislation to designate the 1.5 million acre
coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness
(H.R.770). Johnson also sponsored an amendment last year to strike
from the House version of the Energy bill (H.R. 4) a provision to
allow oil drilling in the Arctic Refuge.

sponsor of the Northern Rockies Ecosytem Protection Act (H.R.488)
that would designate Wilderness areas and wild and scenic river
corridors among other things in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington,
and Wyoming.
MA Ed Markey (D) is the lead
sponsor of legislation to designate the 1.5 million acre coastal
plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as Wilderness
(H.R.770). Markey also sponsored an amendment last year to strike
from the House version of the Energy bill (H.R. 4) a provision to

sponsor of a floor amendment in 2000 to redirect funds in the
Interior Appropriations bill from the timber sales program to
protect fish and wildlife in national forests.
NY Sherwood Boehlert (R) is
the co-author of a Dear Colleague letter asking support of the
National Forest Roadless Area Act of 2002 which will codify the
Roadless Area Conservation Rule that was pub- lished in the Federal
Register on January 12, 2001.
NY Maurice Hinchey (D) is the

which would designate more than nine million acres of land managed

WA Norm Dicks (D) was the
sponsor of a floor amendment in 2000 to strike from the Interior
Appropriations a provision prohibiting funding for national

WA Jay Inslee (D) sponsored a
floor amendment to the San Rafael Western Legacy District and
National Conservation Act (H.R. 3605) that would have expanded the
boundaries of the proposed National Conservation Area to include all
areas in the San Rafael Swell region that qualify for wilderness
