Wild Card

2002

Welcome to Wild Card,
The First Wilderness Report Card

May, 2002

The American Wilderness Coalition (AWC) is pleased to present this first ever Wilderness Report Card, a comparative analysis of the votes and positions taken by all Members of Congress on current wilderness and public lands issues. Each year, the AWC will publish a similar report covering the votes of the prior legislative session.

The purpose of Wild Card is to provide research and analysis of key wilderness and public lands votes and positions taken by Members of Congress. This research will be instrumental to the numerous wilderness campaigns around the country as they work to build support within Congress for new and pending wilderness legislation and influence national policies that effect wilderness, such as the energy legislation currently being considered in Congress. Through Wild Card, we hope activists will have the information they need to lobby and educate their Members of Congress about wilderness issues.

AWC does not endorse candidates for public office and nothing in this report is intended to support or oppose any candidate.

The American Wilderness Coalition has researched and analyzed specific wilderness related votes and co-sponsorships of key wilderness legislation from the 106th and 107th sessions of Congress. In the Senate, eight positions were considered and in the House, 12 positions were graded. Each Member of Congress has been given a grade based on his or her positions to protect America’s beautiful public lands and wilderness areas. A description of each position is included in Wild Card.

The American Wilderness Coalition seeks to protect America’s last remaining wilderness areas and to expand our National Wilderness Preservation System by supporting the work of individuals and organizations that are advocating for wilderness protection around the country. There are active wilderness campaigns in every western state as well as several in the East including efforts in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southern Appalachians, Wisconsin and Illinois.

I would like to personally thank the Board and numerous individuals from the conservation community who gave their volunteer time to create Wild Card. This report will help to educate the American public about Congress’ efforts to protect our country’s public land and wilderness areas.

Regards,

Melyssa Watson, Chair
American Wilderness Coalition
