Our National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS) currently consists
of 643 individual Wilderness Areas covering more than 105 million
acres of public lands managed by the Forest Service, Park Service,
Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Wildlife Service. Under
the Wilderness Act of 1964, Congress must pass legislation to add
or remove any areas from the NWPS. The 106th Congress passed eight
Wilderness bills which were signed by President Clinton and added
over 1 million acres to the NWPS. The 107th Congress passed 4
wilderness bills adding over 500,000 acres to the NWPS. See the
